TWU students celebrate cultural diversity at International Day

Langley, British Columbia—TWU students from countries around the world had the opportunity to showcase the culture of their homelands at Trinity Western University’s International Day on February 6.

Many of the students showcasing their countries attend the English as a Second Language Institute (ESLI) on Trinity Western’s campus and are part of over 250 international students in Trinity Western’s community. Students come from countries such as France, Germany, Netherlands, Hong Kong, Japan, India, Israel, Kenya, Kuwait, Mexico, Chile, Romania, Rwanda, Ukraine and United Arab Emirates.

“We want to celebrate the various cultures represented on campus and promote awareness of our international community,” says Delta Arnold, TWU’s International Program Coordinator.

Activities for the day included displays and workshops ranging from Thai cooking to Native crafts. As part of the celebration, students from Tianjin University of Technology in China, the official training site for the Chinese national martial arts team, presented a martial arts demonstration featuring the gold medal winner from the team.

Eleven students and 4 leaders from Tianjin University, including Li Gui Shan, associate dean of the college of foreign studies at the university are visiting Trinity Western as part of a cultural exchange and field studies program. Families in the community have hosted the students for their two-week stay while the students attend classes, lectures and activities at TWU.

In return, this May, Trinity Western students in TWU’s international business course will travel to China where they will spend three weeks in Tianjin and one week in Hong Kong, visiting Chinese businesses and corporations to gain a first hand look at international operations.
