TWU bestows honorary doctorate upon MLA Jim Penner

On October 4, Trinity Western University welcomed Jim Penner, member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba (Steinbach constituency), as the convocation speaker at the School of Graduate Studies’ graduation ceremony. Penner is well known for his years of dedicated service in both the private and public sectors, as a businessperson, community representative and non-profit volunteer.

TWU was privileged to recognize Penner’s outstanding example of leadership by granting him an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at the ceremony. “Bestowing an honorary doctorate is our way of acknowledging someone who exemplifies the ideals upon which our institution is based,” said Neil Snider, PhD, TWU President. “Mr. Penner, through his service to community and country, has shown he is a leader of integrity and vision who is working to make the world a better place.”

Penner received his post-secondary education at Trinity International University in Chicago, and originally planned to work overseas as a translator. Due to a family illness, he was called home to run his family’s prairie grocery store, Penner Foods. Over the next 36 years, Penner developed the store into an award-winning chain of six grocery stores employing over 800 people, which was recognized as Manitoba Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year.

He has served as President of the Steinbach Chamber of Commerce, President of the Association for Community Living and President of the Canadian Association of Independent Grocers. In addition, he has worked with the poor in India and Russia as part of the Mennonite Economic Development Association (MEDA).

In 1999 he was elected to the Manitoba Legislature where he currently serves as representative for the Steinbach constituency. In his elected role he serves as Finance Critic and Critic for Industry, Trade and Mines for the Progressive Conservative caucus of Manitoba.

Trinity Western is grateful for Penner’s nineteen years of service to the university as a board member. Penner resides in Steinbach, Manitoba with his wife of over 40 years, Bev. They are the proud parents of three and grandparents of five.
