While colorful leaves and a turn toward colder weather typically mark the arrival of autumn, the Trinity Western University Environmental Studies Program notes the change in season by an additional sign: the annual return of the salmon to the Salmon River which runs through TWU’s Ecosystem Study Area .
In celebration of the annual “running of the salmon,” the Environmental Studies Department together with the TWU Outdoors Club, and A Rocha TWU, host the yearly run to raise awareness about the environment and to promote healthy living. The fifth Salmon River Trail Race will be held on Saturday, October 17th, 2009 and is a 3.3 km run (for individual participants) or 6.6 km run (for relay teams). The walk/run family friendly race, open to the community, begins at 9:00 am followed by prizes and refreshments at 10:00 am.
The lively Salmon River Trail Race has a history of participants wearing costumes and coming up with often zany names for their relay teams. Last year, TWU Professor of Education Dr. Ken Pudlas and his colleges formed a relay team and ran the race dressed as teachers. “We wore suits and ties, and I carried a coffee mug,” laughs Pudlas.
The annual race provides a great opportunity for the community to explore the TWU Ecosystem Study Area (ESA), to support environmental stewardship and for personal fitness.
TWU is also opening up and offering guided interpretive public walks before the race during its “Explore the Trails” week occurring the week of October 12th. Guided interpretive walks through the Salmon River Trail will be led Tuesday through Friday at noon, and on Saturday at 10:30 am following the race.
Bring family and friends to experience the beauty of autumn along the Salmon River.
