The Trinity Western University Spartans are well represented at the 2009 FISU summer games. The Spartans are sending their largest contingent ever to Belgrade, Serbia to compete in the 25th edition of the Summer Universiade, which is the second largest multi-sport games in the world after the Olympic Games.
Representing TWU and wearing Canada’s national colours are men’s basketball forward Jacob Doerksen (Abbotsford, B.C.), men’s soccer keeper Andrew Kowan (Richmond, B.C.), women’s volleyball middle Dayna Jansen Van Doorn (Langley, B.C.) and women’s soccer keeper Kristen Funk (Calgary), defender Jilian Dietrich (Calgary), midfielders Rebecca Ferguson (Calgary) and Melissa Mobilio (Calgary) and forward Nikki Wright (Surrey, B.C.).
TWU is well represented on the staffing side of the games. Also from TWU are women’s soccer coach Graham Roxburgh, who will head coach the Canadian women’s soccer team, women’s volleyball coach Ryan Hofer, who will be an assistant with the Canadian women’s volleyball team and athletic therapist Natalie Ghobrial, who will take care of the Canadian women’s soccer team.
In all Trinity Western has 11 individuals, eight athletes and three staff, representing Canada at this year’s summer games.
