On January 29 TWU Education student, Tara Teng, was crowned Miss Canada 2011 during a ceremony held in Montreal. Of the win, Teng said, "I am so excited for this new opportunity ahead of me. Not only do I have the honour and privilege of representing my beautiful home of Canada to the world, I now have a larger platform to speak from. My goal as Miss Canada is unchanged from my mission as Miss British Columbia."
Since winning the Miss British Columbia title in July, Teng had become president of TWU's International Social Justice Club, had founded Freedom week - a series of events across Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley intended to bring awareness to modern-day slavery - and had met with Prime Minister Harper to discuss the issue of human trafficking.
