"As an administrator in the Langley School District, I have had the pleasure of working with several TWU students in two schools. Their enthusiasm, knowledge and dedication to education is refreshing and a credit to the program’s preparation and implementation."-R. Alto, Alice Brown Elementary School
"When I’m hiring teachers I always send an advertisement to the School of Education and interview any applicant who has a TWU degree. I am completely convinced that the TWU program is preparing teachers who are enabled and willing to change their world one student at a time."- Keith Penner, B.Ed. 1991 Principal, Living Waters Christian Academy
No matter what subject or grade level you love, the insights and skills you develop in our program open up a whole array of teaching opportunities. Our alumni teach in public and independent schools in Canada, the U.S., and in all continents around the world except Antarctica. All of our 32 graduates in 2006 had been offered teaching contracts by the time school started in September. Two accepted jobs overseas in Thailand and Hong Kong. More than a few took classroom positions in Christian schools. Several were hired by public schools to job share several days a week and be teachers-on-call (TOCs) the other days. A number filled positions of teachers on temporary leaves. Others started their career by being contract TOCs in one or more public school districts.
In short, while it’s not always possible to get a regular full-time classroom position right away, qualified graduates are in a good position to find employment. Particular areas where there are shortages are French, mathematics, chemistry and physics, English as a Second Language, and male teachers for the elementary grades.
What contributes to our program’s success is that our students are so special! As Dean Kimberly Franklin puts it, "I am continually inspired by our students’ sense of calling and their incredible commitment, dedication, energy, creativity, and passion. Our program is successful because of who our students are. When in the schools, they touch the lives of their students, school associates, parents and other staff members in ways that none of us could ever predict. It’s a wonderful privilege to be part of their growth as professionals. It’s exciting to know that they will be part of writing the future of education!"
We’d love to have you join us in the stimulating and rewarding venture of becoming a professional teacher!
