News from Kiev

It's April 2009, and I (Wes Janzen, TWU Director of Choral Activities) am currently in Kiev with my wife Kim and our three kids on a leave of absence from TWU. We are enjoying a great adventure here, working as volunteers for Music Mission Kiev. I'm here as the Principal Guest Conductor of the Kiev Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.

Life is certainly rich and full in this great city. Today (Tuesday), we are having a picnic with "Grace Gang" - a bunch of teenage orphan kids. Yesterday (Monday), I gave a lecture at the main Ukrainian Orthodox Church Seminary and led a Mendelssohn Elijah rehearsal of the Kiev Symphony Orchestra Chorus. The previous day (Sunday) we were part of Christian Children's Music Club, I preached at St. Paul's Church, here in Kiev and then we had a bunch of people over for dinner. The day before (Saturday), our kids helped with food distribution to well over 300 poor widows, Kim taught a Bible Study to a group of about 100 widows and then we went grocery shopping at an outdoor market. That gives you a little window into our life here - never boring!

Kim and our three kids have a family website with lots of pictures, if you're interested in more news.

I'm very thankful that Ay Laung Wang has done such a great job directing TWU Choirs during my leave of absence. Thank you Ay Laung! I look forward to being back with you in September, and we have a great fall semester on the horizon! For new students, please visit my previous blogs if you want to know more about our priorities, and what we do with our TWU family of choirs. You can also read a description of what's in the audition for students interested in voice lessons, choirs, vocal ensembles etc.

Look forward to working with you in fall of 2009!
