The mission of the Modern Language Department at Trinity Western University is to provide a balanced program of language study, focusing principally on language, literature, and cultural components, presented from a Christian perspective, with the goal of sensitizing students to the peoples represented by each language taught, while at the same time preparing them linguistically, intellectually, and spiritually to interact with this new language group and culture and to use their language skills in the marketplaces of life.

The following programs are offered:

TWU’s Modern Language program is strategically preparing students to impact the world by focusing on a number of significant linguistic areas. Courses contribute to both a global vision and an understanding of Canadian culture and identity.

Why Study Modern Languages at Trinity Western University?

Language courses open up new horizons in a number of ways. All of our introductory courses introduce cultural awareness as well as oral and written skills. As students progress, they come to better understand the lives of people in our own country and around the world. Literature courses provide insight into various cultures, examining ideas and literary works that have impacted the world. They also help students develop analytical and writing skills.

Language courses include work in the multimedia lab, where DVD’s, videos, CD’s, CD-ROMs and websites are used to enhance learning. Classes provide dynamic interaction between students and professors. Our goal is for students to become proficient in the basic skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening comprehension. But beyond this, they will learn to see others through Christ’s eyes, even as they come to better understand their language and culture.

TWU presently offers courses in six languages:

  • French
  • Spanish
  • German
  • Russian
  • Japanese
  • Chinese
