Student Awards & Accomplishments 2009-10

Katharine Bubel has been admitted into the Ph.D. program at the University of Victoria.  She has been awarded a doctoral SSHRC to fund her research on twentieth-century American literature, and is also the recipient of entrance awards at the University of Victoria.

Corrie Shoemaker is the recipient of a significant departmental entrance award at the University of Waterloo, where she will begin doctoral studies in September 2009.  Her dissertation will focus on contemporary adaptations of Shakespearean drama."

Three MAIH students have been awarded Social Science & Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) awards worth $17,000 for the coming 2009-10 year.  All three students have exhibited excellence in their academic studies - two in the History Stream and one in the English Stream.  Congratulations to Lydia Wytenbroek, Danielle Kooy and Laura Van Dyke!

New Student Orientation 2009

New MAIH students are invited to a free BBQ lunch sponsored by the Graduate Student Association on Wednesday, Sept. 9 from noon until 1:30 outside the NorthWest Building.  Following lunch the MAIH program will have its own orientation from 1:30 - 3:00.  Stream Coordinators and some faculty will be available to answer questions.  This will be a good time to complete any administrative loose ends.  New students will be receiving emails with further details.  Classes begin on Sept. 10th.

Annual Convocation

The convocation ceremony for students in graduate programs will be on Saturday, November 7, 2009.

Dr. Barbara Pell went to be with the Lord on March 9, 2009.

Dr. Pell was the first English Stream Coordinator for the MAIH program and an enthusiastic supporter during its initial launch. She will be greatly missed. A service of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 12 noon at St. Matthew's Anglican Church in Abbotsford.

Celebrating Student Accomplishments!

  • Laura Ralph has been awarded a grant from the Reid Trust to travel to England to do research for her thesis on William Cowper.

  • Katharine Bubel has had an article on Jane Eyre and Middlemarsh accepted by "Renascence" a very prestigious American academic literary journal.
  • Connie Braun has signed a contract with Ronsdale Press to publish the book of memoir she has written about the Mennonite/Ukrainian experience of displaced persons in WW2. They are featuring her book in their fall catalogue.
  • Shehnaz Hozaima had a paper accepted for presentation at Harvard's Gender in International History Conference, March 2008 in Cambridge.
  • Laura Ralph has had her paper "William Cowper's Proto-Ecology: Romantic Reconfigurations of the Human to Animal Relationship" accepted for the ACCUTE/NASSR (North American Society of Studies in Romanticism) Conference at UBC, May 29 - June 1.
  • Laura Ralph has had a paper "The Disobedient Imagination: Lewis's Interrogation of Story in Perelandra" accepted for the "The Festival of Faith and Writing" Conference at Calvin College, Grand Rapids, April 17-19.

Awards & Scholarships 2007-08:

News Break! The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) has just announced the recipients of the 2007-2008 awards. TWU MAIH students receive awards:

Kerby Redekop was awarded the Canada Graduate Scholarship - Masters ($17,500 for 12 months) to continue his MAIH.The research topic for his studies is "Kierkegaardian Ontology in Postmodernity.

Leighton Sawatsky was awarded the Canada Graduate Scholarship - Masters ($17,500 for 12 months) to continue his MAIH in the Philosophy stream.

Corrie Shoemaker was awarded the Canada Graduate Scholarship - Masters ($17,500 for 12 months) to begin her MAIH in the English Stream.

Laura Ralph has been chosen to receive the CRC graduate Student Research Fellowship for 2007-2008 worth $12,000. She will assist Dr. Jens Zimmermann in his program of research.

Lesya Moore accepts UBC offer for PhD program

Lesya, one of the first graduates of our MAIH program, is pursing PhD studies and received offers from University of Ottawa, University of Alberta, York University and University of British Columbia each with generous financial funding attached. She has accepted UBC's offer for fall 2007. Congratulations Lesya!
MAIH Student Lesya Moore awarded $17,500 SSHRC Scholarship

Lesya has won the $17,500 Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada award to complete her MA in Interdisciplinary Humanities at Trinity Western University for the academic year 2006-2007.Lesya is a graduate of the English Department here at TWU.Congratulations Lesya!

Dr. Jens Zimmermann awarded Canada Research Chair

The government finally made the announcement official on July 19, 2006.Dr. Jens Zimmermann a member of TWU's English Department and MAIH Faculty received a Tier 2 - Canada Research Chair in Interpretation, Religion & Culture.This chair award not only signifies Dr. Zimmermann's prominence as a scholar of national and international reputation and greatly increases his capacity to do more significant research and writing, but it is of considerable benefit to MAIH students.The funding provides for a valuable graduate student research fellowship per year but also helps bring in internationally renowned scholars to the University.

Dr. Jens Zimmermann gave his Inagural Lecture on Nov. 30, 2006 outlining his research project - "Faithful Interpretations of Humanity: Religion, Culture and ethics after Christianity." Dr. Peter Erb from Wilfrid Laurier University and Dr. Mark Vessey from University of British Columbia acted as respondents.

MAIH Student Amber Butler receives fellowship

Amber Butler has been chosen to receive the CRC graduate student research fellowship for 2006-2007 worth $12,000. She will assist Dr. Jens Zimmermann in his program of research and in bringing to campus scholars of note. Congratulations Amber!
