The program provides several options:

1. Specialized Humanities in English, History or Philosophy

• A. with thesis

• B. without thesis

2. General Humanities

1. Specialized Humanities

For students with a strong interest in one of the disciplines in the program. The level of specialization is similar to that of a M.A. in that discipline (e.g. M.A. in English, M.A. in History or M.A. in Philosophy). Both the thesis and non-thesis options are open to any student with a strong background in one of these disciplines but they are especially designed for students desiring to continue on to PhD studies in the chosen discipline.

At the same time, the interdisciplinary character of the Humanities program is provided by: 1) the composition of the required three interdisciplinary core seminars; 2) the ability of the student (with the advisor) to select according to individual interest appropriate courses from a variety available in each disciplinary stream; and, 3) an intentional interdisciplinary component in the thesis. The common critique from a Christian worldview perspective also provides both an integrative and an interdisciplinary facet.

(The coursework option is especially recommended for students in English; optional for History and Philosophy students as determined with advisor).

It includes the core as above but replaces the thesis requirement with a major essay and an additional course. The Thesis Program requires 36 semester hours.

B. Disciplinary Stream - 21 Semester Hours (in addition to the core courses)

C. Electives - 6 Semester Hours

2. General Humanities

This option is designed for a number of categories of students, including: teachers of English, History and Social Studies; professionals and other students desiring broad studies in the humanities disciplines; students desiring to pursue PhD studies in general humanities. It includes the core as above but replaces the thesis requirement with a major essay and an additional course. It requires 36 semester hours.

A. Core Requirements - 9 Semester Hours.

B. Coursework -  7 courses (21 sh) with a maximum of 4 courses (12 sh) in one discipline

***May include 500 or 600 level or Directed Studies

C. Research Design & Major Essay - 6 Semester Hours
