This course considers the characteristics of effective instruction and the process
of program improvement. Students will examine theories of and current research
on the nature of effective instructional leadership. They will also analyze models,
practices, and problems of implementing curriculum and other changes at
institutional and classroom levels.
Course Objectives
This course is designed so that leaders will:
1. Examine and discern features of sound classroom pedagogy based on a
well-defined vision of effective teaching and learning.
2. Evaluate research on instructional improvement and program
implementation in terms of a Christian worldview.
3. Identify the characteristics of an effective instructional leader.
4. Consider how the school is the basic unit of change and how the school
district or umbrella organization can play a supportive role in school
renewal.
5. Understand the causes, barriers, and key ingredients of successful
implementation and continuation of meaningful instructional and program
change
6. Examine the role of students, parents, teachers, principals, and external
forces with respect to educational change at the school level, and develop
guidelines for coping with change that affects school programs.
7. Formulate strategies for school improvement in relation to the mission of
a school, and draw up a school development plan that engages and
empowers the staff.
