The program focuses on personal and professional development from two perspectives. First, the emphasis is on an approach to language instruction that acknowledges the importance of this discipline to serving others around the world--working in communities of learning. From the start, the way we teach mirrors our belief in the strength of collaboration and teamwork. The overall framework presented is always tied very closely to the mission of the university. The instructors teach from a Christian perspective, although students of all faiths and beliefs are in the program. Second, the curriculum is forward-looking by preparing instructors who are competent in educational technology, state-of-the-art teaching strategies, course design, and program implementation.
In some cases, those students who do not have prior training in English language instruction, requisite English language skills or teaching experience may be required to enroll for pre-requisite courses prior to enrolling in the Online or Resident programs.
The online MA TESOL is at 2.5 to 3 year program that has been designed to meet a variety of student needs and specializations around the world. The format is based on a unique collaborative online instructional system. Typically, the first summer of study, students will be required to come to campus for a 2-week intensive face-to-face session. This session will help prepare students for the following two years of course work. Throughout the rest of the program, students work through three-week modules that are mediated by a combination of teaching methods, which may include online discussions, readings, video, collaborative project work, and face-to-face meetings with each other and the instructors.
