MA TESOL - Vision and Objectives

MA TESOL Objectives

Students will:

  • be capable of teaching in multiple contexts
  • be critical readers of contemporary research and methods literature
  • demonstrate both appropriate professional speaking and writing style
  • be both enthusiastic about and comfortable with collaboative learning
  • be professionally "connected" to the field of English Language Teaching

What Students Say...

  • "The interaction between students increases the learning potential exponentially as we share research findings with each other."
    Ed, MA TESOL alumni
  • "The collaboration [components of the program] creates an interactive community which results in MORE dialogue than in a face-to-face classroom setting."
    Mike, MA TESOL alumni
  • "I think working in the collaborative model, in which we are reading each other's work, developing our own written section, receiving feedback from others, while referencing online and text materials, has elevated the quality of the research writing immensely."
    Cheryl, MA-TESOL alumni

Program Learning Theory

The program is built around several key features.

1) Collaboration. Each module centers around a task, called a Teachable Point of View (TPOV). In small groups, students create working documents which are read and critiqued by fellow students and faculty.

2) Online Instructional System. For those students who choose the online MA TESOL, face-to-face classes are held in the summer, while most of the remaining classes and assignments are conducted in a dual delivery mode (both face-to-face and online). Students may take fall and spring semester courses completely online; face-to-face is available, but not required.

3) Research. Students are constantly interacting with research -- in the lectures, in the readings, in the assigned tasks, and in their applied research reports. Most of this research is done online. Their culminating project in their final semester is an action research project.
