WORKS ON PAPER

“The most conspicuous aspect of our visual landscape today is reproduction.”
- Susan Tallman, The Contemporary Print

Printmaking, our first form of mass media, and photography, the foundation of our current visual mass media, are both founded on the principle of producing an image from a matrix: a plate, a stencil, a negative, a digital file. Walter Benjamin contended that reproduction would remove the “aura”, that quality of unique existence, from art. But the ability to make more than one, to experiment and grow, and evolve different versions, gives this form of art a life of its own, more democratic, fluid and accessible to the viewer.
