Honourary Doctor of Fine Arts Degree Conferred on Ian Hampton
On October 6, 2011, Simon Fraser University conferred an honourary Doctor of Fine Arts degree on Ian Hampton, acclaimed cellist and distinguished instructor at SAMC Music. Dr. Hampton is the Langley Community Music School artistic director emeritus and formerly principal cellist of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Opera Orchestra, and CBC Radio Orchestra. Dr. Hampton has also been a member of the London Symphony Orchestra and Academy of St. Martin's in the Fields, and is a founding member of the renowned Purcell String Quartet.
In his tribute, SFU's Martin Gotfrit hailed Dr. Hampton as "a major force in the commissioning of new works for the cello, a singular figure in the training of young musicians, and a strong champion for all aspects of his craft."
SAMC is proud of Dr. Hampton's contribution to the education of young musicians in our Department of Music, a relationship which spans several decades. Dr. David Squires, who worked with Dr. Hampton and the Purcell String Quartet on a new work in the early 1980s, said, "Ian has always been committed to music-making amongst people of all ages, stages, and career paths. We are privileged to enjoy his collegiality and congratulate him on this distinguished honour."
