Conservation biology, marine ecology, coral reef ecology, and ecological agriculture. Research has particularly centered around animal conservation, with active research programs on the American kestrel, Falco sparverius, and the European starling, Sturnus vulgaris, funded by the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture and Whatcom Farm Friends, and on the Oregon forest snail, Allogona townsendiana, under a grant from the Endangered Species Recovery Fund/World Wildlife Fund Canada. Other interest areas include marine and terrestrial mollusc conservation, wildlife-friendly agriculture, land management for biodiversity, the interface between salmon-bearing streams and agriculture, and impacts of human development on watersheds (both temperate and tropical). Co-owner of a commercial dairy farm that strives for ecological sustainability.
