Direct Loans are low-interest loans for students to help finance a university education. The lender is the U.S. Department of Education (the Department) rather than a bank or other financial institution.
Please note that if you are applying for a Direct Loan for the Fall semester, you should have all of your application pieces submitted before the end of September. If you are applying for a Direct Loan for the Spring semester, you should have all of your application pieces submitted before the end of January.
1) Complete your FAFSA.
2) Complete the Master Promissory Note.
3) First time borrowers must complete Entrance Counseling.
4) Complete the statement of Borrowers Loan Certification. This document will allow you to select the loan amount that you would like to be certified for.
5) E-mail us at awards@twu.ca to inform us that you have completed steps #1 through #4.
In addition to a Direct Loan, graduate students may be eligible for a Direct PLUS Loan up to the cost of attendance minus all other financial assistance. PLUS loan borrowers cannot have an adverse credit history (a credit check will be done). Complete the PLUS request process at www.studentloans.gov.
To remain eligible for the Direct Loan and PLUS Loan as a graduate student you must be enrolled in at least half-time studies. Please note that you cannot take any online courses, distance education or correspondence courses while receiving Direct /PLUS Loan funding. Subsidized loans are based on financial need. Unsubsidized loans are available to students who do not qualify for subsidized loans.
