February, 2010 Newsletter

February 2010
Greetings Alumni,

After years of anticipation, preparation, and investment, Vancouver is getting ready to host the world at the 2010 Olympics this month. Vancouver is buzzing and the excitement is everywhere.

Here at TWU, we are getting into the Olympic spirit as well. We are converting the entire campus into a mini Olympic village, with viewing stations in strategic locations around campus: hockey games in the caf, speed skating in Fraser Lounge, and snowboarding in the Collegiums. I hope wherever you are, you will be able to find time to enjoy watching your favorite winter Olympic sport later this month.

In other news, look for the next issue of the Trinity Western Magazine coming out in March. In my opening letter of the Alumni Section, I have made a bold challenge to alumni. So please take the time to read through this section, and see if you are one of the 300 I talk about in my letter.

Finally, I trust you are all praying for the tragedy in Haiti, and helping in whatever capacity you are able. We as believers have been blessed by God’s provision. This is the time to share our blessings with those in need.

Peace,

Alumni Reminder

Lifelong Learning Cruise
As much as we were looking forward to our third Lifelong Learning Cruise (to the Caribbean), we have found that the timing this year has not worked out for many attendees, and we have decided to postpone the cruise until February 2011. The destination has also changed – due to popular demand, we will be doing a Mexican cruise leaving out of Los Angeles. Please stay tuned for more details as the plans come together. For now, please mark February 20 – 28, 2011 in your calendars as the cruise date.

TWU Alumni in the Olympics!
Congratulations to alumni Calvin Daling, Lisa Edwardson, and Heidi Langman who proudly carried the Olympic torch in the torch run for the 2010 Olympics. See more of their experience online.

Their daughter, Kimberley and her husband, Daron Mayes (‘95) live in Salmon Arm with their four boys, and Danica (‘04) and Clayton Krahn and their sons live in Chilliwack. Joel is planting churches in Cambodia; and the Reimers were thrilled to lead an MEI High School team to work with Joel for two weeks last spring. Jordan Eshpeter - 2004
For Trinity Western University alum, Jordan, the road with the BC Lions this year has been a tough and exciting year. The 30-year-old has been working as the Manager of Ticket Sales overseeing a group of eight staff who have the collective goal of putting as many people in seats as possible at each BC Lions home game. “Sometimes you pick your job and sometimes your job picks you, and I feel that the sports business has picked me,” says an enthusiastic Eshpeter. Christmas at the Chan
After the finale at this year’s Christmas at the Chan the audience at the sold out concert raised to their feet, yelled multiple bravos, and clapped their hands loudly in appreciation for the talent that they had just heard. And they had good reason to award a standing ovation. The stage, at the stunningly beautiful Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at UBC, was filled with over 200 proficient voices consisting of the Trinity Western University Choirs, TWU Chamber Singers, Pacific Mennonite Children’s Choir and members of the Langley Fine Arts School Senior Choir and Chamber Singers. Led by Artistic Director, Wes Janzen, the Choirs were supported by over 30 professional musicians including organ, percussion and harp.

Cheers or Jeers
In February and March the world will come to Metro Vancouver and Whistler to celebrate the 2010 Olympic Games. And for locals, whether you are a proponent or not of the games you inevitably will be affected by some element of the events. This fact was the basis for a survey that a group of anthropology students from Trinity Western University conducted hoping that the information they gathered from the public will provide future Olympic organizations with feedback on what VANOC and planners could have done better to prepare their citizens for the Games. The survey reflects opinions of a random selection of people and their concerns and expectations toward the Olympics

Spearheading the survey was Professor of Anthropology Claudia Launhardt who frequently encourages her class to conduct these types of surveys, giving them practical experience to compliment what they learn in the classroom.
