Alumni News & Updates

May 2009

Greetings alumni,

This last month has been an incredibly active time at Trinity Western University. We have seen over 440 students walk across the stage and graduate on April 25. We have also held the third annual State of the University fundraising dinner on April 27, had the Board of Governors' meeting on the weekend of April 25, and experienced our fiscal year end on April 30. And, to top it all off, Summer Sessions are already well underway. Needless to say, things at TWU are as busy as ever.

In addition to these developments, TWU has recently produced two new "Impact the World" videos that highlight how TWU professors and students are making a difference. I would highly recommend taking the time to watch the three-minute videos. It is not only fascinating content, but it has been produced so well that it makes me even prouder of my alma mater.

There have also been some other exciting things happening at TWU in the way of the Community in Covenant (formerly Community Standards). If you are interested in reading up on the proposed changes, you can download a copy of the document at Community in Covenant. The Committee working on the re-write would love to hear your thoughts on it, and are accepting comments up until May 31. Your comments can be sent to communityincovenant@twu.ca.

All the best as we move into summer!

TWU's 47th annual Commencement Ceremony on Saturday April 25th 2009 saw 445 individuals receiving degrees, including Dr. Marvin P. The degree of Doctor of Philanthropy (honoris causa) was presented to Dr. Marvin Kehler by Provost Dr. Dennis Jameson; and at the ceremony for Faculty of the Humanities and Social Sciences, Jameson presented Deborah Grey with the degree of Doctor of Laws (honoris causa). Both degrees were conferred by President Raymond.Read more...

Recently, reporter Brian Lewis of the Vancouver Province spoke to Dr. Raymond on the future of TWU and published the article, "TWU isn't resting on its laurels as recession gnaws at its bottom line." In the article, Dr. Raymond highlights the proposed opening of a new urban campus in downtown Richmond for 2012, and another move to increase TWU's reach into the community by establishing a two-year program for the Fraser Valley for adults over the age 25 to complete their university degrees on a part-time basis.Read more...

A pilot project by TWU Assistant Professor of Biology, Karen Steensma, and her student researchers just might provide a natural solution for the ridding of starlings on blueberry farms. A study conducted last summer south of the border in Whatcom County showed that when a small, territorial falcon known as the American kestrel is in the area, the starling population may decrease. Plotting bird against bird may be the right direction as starlings fear all birds of prey; and studies in other parts of North America have shown that kestrels will chase and frighten starlings.Read more...

Arnica Skulstad-Brown - 2003

Since earning her MFA in Acting from Temple University (Philadelphia), God has been leading Arnica on a most unusual adventure. From commuting the East Coast scene by Greyhound bus, to establishing a life in Los Angeles, to returning to Vancouver and facing the one city that seemed impenetrable, she has been on a journey of faith-building and character-shaping proportions. The roles she is consistently called upon to bring to life are the broken sort that may seem questionable for a good Christian girl to play, but Arnica senses this as her calling-- to illuminate this brokenness in a way only those who know hope can. She is currently appearing in a Vancouver-based webseries, Condition:Human [www.conditionhuman.com], by brilliant young filmmaker Trenton Lepp, which explores the broken and isolated state of humanity, reflected in contemporary dependencies on technology over human contact. This summer Arnica will be traveling to Sao Paulo, Brazil to shoot an independent feature, the family drama "Zach, Alison and Many Others". Please pray for Arnica as she seeks to be Christ's love and light to those she's working with. www.arnicaskulstadbrown.com
