October, 2009 Newsletter

October 2009
Greetings Alumni,

This is always my favorite time of the year: new students arrive, the campus is full of life, programs are starting up, and the weather is still sunny and beautiful. Rain has its beauty as well, but the campus looks so amazing on a sunny day!

I have been encouraged this month to pray more. So, I will pass that encouragement on to you, the TWU Alumni. Please pray for our students, our staff, our faculty, our administrators, and the decision makers at TWU. These are exciting times and it is clear that the Lord has his hand on TWU.

On September 20, we enjoyed a beautiful outdoor “Land Dedication Service” for the new Calvin B. Hanson Chapel. It was a wonderful ceremony. About 200 alumni came to listen to our first president, Calvin Hanson, preach about the beginnings of Trinity Western and how this school, and campus, have been committed to the Lord’s work. It was truly inspiring.

I was encouraged to see a large group of early alumni mingling on the Reimer patio to the late hours of the night – laughing and reminiscing of their great experiences at Trinity Western. And I remembered the many times I have sat around with old TWU friends doing the same. What a blessing it has been to be a part of Trinity Western. I cherish my experiences here, and pray that the current students will enjoy the same!

We are truly blessed,

Spotlight on Alumni

Claire Lemiski (2008)
Claire graduated with a major in Geography and concentration in Aviation. She is now living in Mississauga, Ontario. In August 2008, Claire started working at Bombardier Aerospace as a Flight Test Engineer on the Dash-8 Q400 (regional twin turboprop). She is involved with the planning, preparation, and execution of flight tests for new parts, development projects, and engineering investigations. From avionics to hydro-mechanical systems, she is learning something new everyday! Another great part about being back in Ontario has been the opportunity to be involved in the music ministry at her church, where she plays her trumpet on a weekly basis.
Brenda Evans (Honourary Alumni)
Brenda Evans (Alumni Coordinator from 1994-2007) and Michele Cartwright became “Your Infinity Team” in August 2008 after having independent real estate careers. As a team we believe we are unique to the Real Estate industry because we focus on building relationships and retaining our client base for life. We are there to fulfill the needs of all potential clients, from the first time home buyer, to the family that is relocating from across the country, to the long time home owner looking for investment opportunities. As listing realtors we also provide our clients with a free home evaluation and marketing plan, essential in ensuring that we sell your home in the fastest period of time for the best price possible.

Our services are available to all of our clients during every single step in the home buying or selling process and they continue until long after papers have been signed and keys have been exchanged. The purchase or sale of a home or property is a large commitment, we recognize this fact and ensure that our clients are well educated and completely confident in their investment before they purchase.

Book Release
Here is the book that makes TWU's mission statement to develop "godly Christian leaders" come alive. It was written by our own Dr. Don Page, who served as Academic Vice President from 1989-1999 and then as the founding Director of the Master of Arts in Leadership program at TWU. Power to Change Ministries has just published this Canadian edition of the book under the title of Servant Empowered Leadership: A Hands-On Guide to Transforming You and Your Organization. It is based on what 166 Christian leaders said was missing in Christian leadership in Canada today. This 2005 survey revealed that the most important missing element was modeling their leadership on the servant leadership modeled by Jesus because it was not understood in practical terms. In short, they were not living the true meaning of TWU's mission statement because they did not understand Jesus' model of servant leadership. This and frequent requests from his TWU students became the rationale for Dr. Page writing this book.

The book has been endorsed by CEO's of major servant-led companies, university presidents and church leaders. A more detailed description of the book and a list of these endorsements can be found at servantempoweredleadership.com .

Survey Question

It seems that there is not much interest in Alumni following a Twitter Account from the Director of Alumni. Given the pace of the world we live in, and the overwhelming media available to us, that is no big surprise.

This month’s survey question:
What surprised you the most when you entered the workforce/grad school upon graduating from TWU?

Please send responses to alumni@twu.ca
