TWU SPARTANS (59) VS THE UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA VIKES (62)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
VIKES WIN GAME OF RUNS AND COLD SHOOTING
LANGLEY, British Columbia – The University of Victoria used a strong fourth quarter to top the No. 10 Trinity Western University 62-59 in a low scoring Canada West match-up in the Spartans home opener at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C.
As was expected it was a battle between the two Pacific Division rivals, who last met in last year’s Pacific Division semi-final, which TWU prevailed 2-1. Neither team was able to take full control of the contest, which had eight lead changes and eight ties in the second half. But in the end it was three point shooting, or missing, proved to be the difference in tonight’s contest. The Vikes outscored the Spartans by 21 points from outside. The Spartans finished a paltry 1-16 from behind the arc, while the Vikes made eight of their 24 attempts.
Led by a near capacity crowd the Spartans came out strong and led 19-15 after the first quarter. But the second quarter ground to a halt as the two teams combined for 16 points, with TWU only managing five points, to make the half time score 26-24 for Victoria.
The two squads matched each other run for fun in the third quarter with neither team gaining an advantage as they went into the final ten minutes all square at 42-42.
With four minutes remaining it was still anybody’s contest as the Spartans led 52-51. The Vikes used a mini run, sparked by Cyril Indome of Winnipeg, to take a 57-52 lead with two and a half minutes remaining. The Spartans answered with Calgary forward Lance Verhoeff, who scored five straight points to make it a three point game, 60-57 for Victoria, with 37 seconds remaining. With the Spartans needing a stop the Vikes Ryan MacKinnon of Comox, B.C. was able to get open for a baseline lay-up with 16 seconds remaining to give Victoria a 62-57 lead with 16 seconds remaining. TWU forward Jacob Doerksen of Abbotsford, B.C. hit a bucket with under a second remaining to make the final 62-59 for Victoria.
Doerksen with 24 points and seven rebounds, Verhoeff with 13 points and eight rebounds and Tyrell Mara of White Rock, B.C. with 11 points and seven rebounds led the Spartans, while MacKinnon with 23 points, Zac Andrus of Vashon Island, Wash with 11 points and Wendell Thomas of Kelowna, B.C. with 10 points and eight rebounds led the Vikes.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at the LEC.
