SPARTANS REOUND TO SOLID WIN OVER VIKES
LANGLEY, British Columbia – Forwards Jacob Doerksen of Abbotsford, B.C. with 35 points and Tyrell Mara of White Rock, B.C. with a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds led the Trinity Western University men’s basketball team to an 83-71 win over the University of Victoria Saturday night at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C. The win earns a weekend split for the No. 10 Spartans and improves them to 3-2, while the loss drops the Vikes to 3-2.
The Spartans dominated the glass out rebounding the Vikes 52-31 and gradually built a solid lead by taking each quarter through the game.
TWU led 17-14 and 31-27 at the half and got breathing room by outscoring Victoria 23-19 in the third to go into the final 10 minutes with a 54-46 lead.
The Spartans continued their strong play to start the final quarter and used a 6-0 run to lead 60-46 two minutes into the quarter. The Vikes made a strong push and after a Ryan MacKinnon of Comox, B.C. three point basket had cut the lead to eight points, 65-57, with four minutes remaining. That was as close as Victoria would get as Trinity Western used a 13-3 run to lead 78-60 with 2:10 remaining before closing the 12 point victory.
MacKinnon with 13 points, Zac Andrus of Vashon Island, Wash. with 12 points, and Jeff Cullen of Victoria with 10 points led the Vikes. Jason Keegstra of Vernon, B.C. added 11 points and six rebounds and Lance Verhoeff of Calgary added 10 rebounds and four points for the Spartans.
Next up for the Spartans are the University of Calgary Dinos on Friday, November 27 and the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns on Saturday, November 28. Both games will be played at the LEC.
Game Notes: Doerksen’s 35 points was three off his career high at TWU of 38 points, which he set against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies on Nov. 7, 08…TWU’s CIS record is 41 points, which is held by Adam Friesen… Victoria committed nine turnovers to TWU’s 17… The Spartans shot 46.2 percent (30-65) from the field, 33.3 percent (4-12) from the three point line and 61.3 percent (19-31) from the foul line, while the Vikes shot 38.3 percent (23-60), 33.3 percent (8-24) and 63 percent (17-27) respectively…the TWU win splits the weekend series with Victoria winning Friday night 62-59…
