LANGLEY, British Columbia
– In the men’s basketball battle between the Trinity Western University Spartans and the University of Calgary Dinos two statistics stands out that proved to be the difference in the Dinos 87-77 win over the Spartans Friday night at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C.

The Dinos trailed the Spartans in almost every statistical category except shooting percentage and free throw attempts. Calgary finished the night shooting 58.8 percent from the field and an astonishing 75 percent from the three point line, while TWU finished shooting 38.5 percent from the field and 29.2 percent from the three point line. The Dinos also went to the charity stripe 15 more times than the Spartans; hitting 30-44 to TWU’s 20-29.

Jacob Doerksen of Abbotsford, B.C. with 17 points, seven rebounds and three assists, Daniel Horner of Abbotsford, B.C. with 13 points and six assists, Lance Verhoeff of Calgary with 11 points and six rebounds and Jason Keegstra of Vernon, B.C. with 10 points and two assists all hit double digits in scoring for the Spartans. While Robbie Sihota of Calgary with 23 points and seven rebounds, Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson of Winnipeg with 18 points, Tyler Fidler of Calgary with 17 points and Ross Bekkering of Taber, Alta. with 11 points and seven rebounds hit double digits for the Dinos.

Calgary came out running and gunning as they dominated the first quarter on their way to a 14 point, 26-12 lead at the end of 10 minutes.

In the second quarter the Dinos expanded their lead to a game high 16 points, 34-18 with just over six minutes remaining in the half after a Bekkering dunk followed by Sihota three point basket. Then just when it looked like it was going to be all Calgary all night long TWU got things going. Six minutes later when Doerksen hit a three point exclamation mark basket just before the buzzer the Spartans had gone on a 21-5 run to tie the game at 39-39 to go into the half even.

The third quarter was back-and-forth for the full 10 minutes. The quarter saw TWU take their only lead of the game 43-42 after a Verhoeff lay-up three minutes into the half. Calgary then controlled the next two minutes to build a seven point lead 50-43 after two Fidler free throws. Three minutes later it was tied again at 50-50 after a Tonner Jackson of Surrey, B.C. basket. Once again Calgary went on a run to lead by seven 62-55 with just over a minute remaining. But again TWU challenged and after Horner’s three point basket with 11 seconds remaining the Spartans only trailed by three points, 62-59 going into the final quarter.

The fourth was an extension of the third as TWU continued to close and with just over seven minutes remaining the game was all tied up at 66-66. But as was the case all night long the Dinos got another run to extend their lead to 10 points, 78-68, with just under three minutes remaining. The Spartans closed to seven points, 84-77, with 58 seconds remaining after another Horner three point basket. But for TWU that was as close as they would get as the clock ran out with them trailing by ten, 87-77.

Next up for the Spartans is the University of Lethbridge on Saturday, November 28. Game time at the LEC is set for 7 p.m. Next up for Calgary is at Simon Fraser University tomorrow night on Burnaby Mountain.
