DOERKSEN SPARKS SPARTANS
LANGLEY, British Columbia – CIS Athlete of the Week Jacob Doerksen of Abbotsford, B.C. scored 22 of his game high 30 points in the second half to lead the Trinity Western University men’s basketball team to an 80-68 win over the visiting University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Saturday night at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C. The win moves the Spartans to 4-3, while the loss drops the Pronghorns to 5-5.
The Pronghorns, who were coming off of a thrilling 87-73 overtime win against No. 10 Simon Fraser University, had a strong opening quarter. TWU jumped out to an early 7-2 lead, but Lethbridge dominated the play from there and after back-to-back baskets by Brandon Thomas-James of Ajax, Ont. the Pronghorns had a 19-4 run, and a 10 point, 21-11, lead with a minute remaining in the opening quarter. TWU forward Lance Verhoeff of Calgary got the Spartans some momentum going into the second quarter with five straight points, including a buck and free throw at the buzzer to make it a five point, 21-16, deficit at the end of the quarter.
The Spartans carried the strong play into the second quarter and tied the contest at 23-23 after a Doerksen lay-up with 8:30 remaining. The two teams exchanged leads and ties through the remainder of the half. It looked like the Pronghorns were going to head to the dressing room with a two point lead, but TWU’s Louis Hurd of Spokane, Wash. Hit a deep three pointer to give the Spartans a two point, 47-45, lead at the end of the half.
The third quarter was the Doerksen-Vehoeff show for TWU. The two forwards combined for all of TWU 15 third quarter points as the Spartans built an 62-47 lead with a 15-2 run. Rob Cooper of Woodbridge and Remington Stemler of Calgary scored five straight for the Pronghorns in the final two minutes to bring Lethbridge to within eight points, 62-54 at the start of the final frame.
The Spartans and Doerksen once again took control in the fourth quarter as they extended their lead back to 16 points, 74-58, with five minutes remaining. TWU emptied the bench late as the Pronghorns closed slightly to end the contest.
Also contributing to the Spartan win were Verhoeff with 17 points and eight rebounds and Calvin Westbrook of Courtenay, B.C. with 11 points, five rebounds and three steals. Leading the way for the Pronghorns were Jeff Price of Calgary with 17 points and Danhue Lawrence of Toronto with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
The Spartans are now off until January when they will resume Canada West play at the University of Alberta on Fri. Jan. 8 and the University of Saskatchewan on Sat. Jan. 9.
Game Notes: TWU held the edge in rebounding 41-32…The Pronghorns made it to the line 27 times to the Spartans 12. Lethbridge made 21 to TWU’s seven…the Spartans shot 47.8 percent (32-67) from the field, while the Pronghorns shot 36.2 percent (21-58)…both teams had 19 turnovers, while TWU had 19 assists to Lethbridges six…
