SPARTANS HOLD OFF CHARGING HUSKIES TO GET FIRST WIN OF 2010

– The visiting Trinity Western University Spartans held on to a quick lead in the first quarter to win 98-87 over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Friday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.

With the win the Pacific Division’s Trinity Western moves to 5-3 on the season, while the Huskies, who play in the Prairie Division, drop below .500 at 4-5.

Trinity Western scored 46 first half points – 27 in the first quarter – and shot 48.4% in the half to take a 46-32 lead into the second half in the first Canada West regular season game of 2010 for both teams.

The Huskies made a strong bid for a comeback in the third quarter outscoring the Spartans by eight points and at one point in the frame were only down by three. Canada West leading scorer Showron Glover, who had 13 points in the quarter, led Saskatchewan’s comeback bid. The team also netted eight three-point shots in the 33 points. They held Trinity Western at 60 points for two minutes in the third quarter.

But the Spartans pulled back out with a strong fourth quarter outscoring the Huskies 27-25. They finished the game shooting 56.3%

Glover netted a game-high 35 points on the night. Two other Huskies scored double digits – Troy Gottselig had 18 points and Duncan Jones finished with 12. Glover also had a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Spartans won the game scoring by committee with four different players with 10 or more points in the match. Calvin Westbrook led the way with 21 points, followed by Tyrell Mara at 13, 2008-09 CIS Player of the Year Jacob Doerksen at 17 and Lance Verhoeff had 10. Verhoeff led the Spartans with nine rebounds.

The Huskies will host the Simon Fraser University Clan Saturday night, who were in Edmonton Friday facing the University of Alberta Golden Bears. Trinity Western will hit the road to take on the Golden Bears Saturday.
