SPARTANS POWER PAST GOLDEN BEARS

EDMONTON
- The Trinity Western University Spartans completed a prairie road trip sweep with a dominating 83-55 win over the University of Alberta in Canada West men’s basketball action Saturday night in Edmonton.  

“We played a great first half defensively which allowed us to get everybody in for good minutes,” commented TWU head coach Scott Allen. “Things are starting to flow together a bit more and the guys are starting to believe in themselves and believe in each other.”

2009 CIS Player of the Year forward Jacob Doerksen of Abbotsford, B.C. led the Spartans to their impressive performance with 25 points and 14 rebounds, while Harvey Bradford of Skookumchuck, B.C. with 15 points and five rebounds answered for Alberta.

The Spartans, who defeated Saskatchewan 98-87 Friday, showed no effects of the long bus ride between Saskatoon and Edmonton as they moved their record to 6-3 and into as second place in the Pacific Division. The loss drops the Golden Bears to 5-7.

TWU, who led by as much as 25 points in the first half, led 16-8 after the first quarter, 40-19 at the half and 63-38 after three quarters.  

Also chipping in for the Spartans were Calvin Westbrook of Courtenay, B.C. and Daniel Horner of Abbotsford, B.C. with 11 points each and Lance Verhoeff of Calgary with 10 points and eight rebounds. Scott Leigh of North Vancouver, B.C. with 13 points also contributed to the Bears final total.

TWU finished shooting 42.1 percent (32-76) from the field, 33.3 percent from the three point line (9-27) and 58.8 percent from the foul line (10-17), while Alberta shot 38.6 percent (22-57), 27.3 percent (6-22) and 55.6 percent (5-9) respectively.

Next up for the Spartans is the 7-2 Simon Fraser Clan. TWU heads to Burnaby Mountain on Jan. 15-16 for the two game series, while Alberta travels to Calgary for a two game series with the Dinos.

Game Notes: the Spartans dominated the glass outrebounding the Golden Bears 50-27. TWU had more offensive rebounds with 22 then Alberta had defensive rebounds with 21…
