TWU SPARTANS (69) AT THE SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY CLAN (81)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LATE SURGE GIVES CLAN VICTORY OVER SPARTANS
BURNABY, British Columbia - Ten fourth quarter points by fifth-year Simon Fraser University senior Matt Kuzminski (Nanaimo, B.C.) propelled the Clan to an 81-69 win over the Trinity Western University Spartans men’s basketball team on Friday night in SFU’s West Gym. Kuzminski finished the game with a team high 20 points, as the Clan improved their Canada West record to 8-2 on the year. The loss drops the Spartans to 6-4 on the season, however Trinity Western will get another shot at the Clan on Saturday night at 5 pm (CLAN TV).
Leading by five (56-51) heading into the fourth quarter, Kuzminski and the Clan exploded offensively, as the swing guard from Vancouver Island connected on two quick three-pointers to gap TWU. The Spartans were able to get within three (66-63) after a lay-up by Jacob Doerksen (Abbotsford, B.C.), however Kuzminski and Chas Kok were able to close out the game for the Clan with clutch free throw shooting down the stretch.
The Clan had exploded in the first half, leading 20-10 at the end of the first quarter, and as much as 15 in the second, before a 13-to-1 run by the Spartans, led largely by Louis Hurd’s (Spokane, Wash.) eight points in the final two minutes, gave the Spartans a 37-36 lead at halftime. The Clan responded out of the halftime break, and controlled the lead for most of the third quarter.
Joining Kuzminski in double figures for the Clan was Kok with 18 points, and Kevin Shaw (North Vancouver, B.C.) with 16. Doerksen added 20 points for the Spartans in a losing cause, while Calvin Westbrook (Courtenay, B.C.) finished with 16, and Hurd ended up with 15.
TWU out rebounded the Clan 45-to-35, while SFU shot 40.3 per cent from the field to the Spartans 37.1 per cent.
