TWU SPARTANS (64) AT THE SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY CLAN (68) - OT
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CLAN TAKES OVERTIME TO BEAT SPARTANS
BURNABY, British Columbia - For the second straight night, fifth-year senior Matt Kuzminski (Nanaimo, B.C.) provided the offensive spark, as the Simon Fraser University Clan men’s basketball team rallied from an 11-point first half deficit to defeat the Trinity Western University Spartans 68-64 in overtime to improve to 9-2 on the season. The loss drops the Spartans to 6-5 on the season.
Kuzminski’s team high 21 points, including five in overtime, made up for SFU’s poor first half shooting performance. The Clan needed five and a half minutes in the first quarter to score their first bucket of the game, and scored only five total points in the first to trail 11-5 after the opening ten minutes.
Near the end of the second quarter, the Spartans opened up an 11-point advantage before SFU was able to cut the gap to five (29-24) at the half following a Kuzminski three-pointer. Chas Kok gave the Clan their first lead of the game three minutes into the third quarter with a three-pointer (34-33), however Calvin Westbrook allowed the Spartans to once again gap the Clan, hitting a three and following it up with a jumper in the paint. Jordan Nostedt (Brandon, MB) tied the game at 40-40 for SFU heading into the fourth quarter following a made free throw.
After falling behind by five after a Jacob Doerksen lay-up three minutes into the fourth, SFU battled back, and had a chance to win the game outright with seven seconds left on the clock. Off a timeout, senior Sean Burke drove the lane, turned and fired an off-balance fall-away jumper which missed wide and the game was sent to overtime tied at 52-52.
In overtime, after starting the game 0-for-12 from the field, including 0-for-7 from beyond the three-point arc, Kevin Shaw connected on his first shot of the game, allowing SFU to take a 57-55 lead. With SFU up 59-58, Kok hit a three-pointer as the shot clock expiried to give the Clan some breathing room. From there, the Clan were able to hit enough of their free throws to hold on for the 68-64 win.
Joining Kuzminski in double figures for the Clan was Kok with 12, and Burke and Greg Gillies (Nanaimo, B.C.) each with ten. For the Spartans, Doerksen scored a game high 22 points, while Tyrell Mara finished with a double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds. The Spartans dominated the boards, out rebounding SFU 54-to-35, including 14-to-5 on the offensive glass.
Next weekend both the Clan and Spartans are at home to Winnipeg and Manitoba on alternating nights.
