LAKE PADDEN RELAYS
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPARTANS CROSS COUNTRY TEAM GETS OFF TO STRONG START AT LAKE PADDEN
BELLINGHAM, Washington – The Trinity Western University cross country team kicked off its 2011-12 campaign this past weekend with a strong showing at the Lake Padden Relays Saturday afternoon.
With Laurier Primeau at the helm for his first race as the Spartans head coach, the Trinity Western contingent, led by first-year athletes Blair Johnston (White Rock, B.C.) and Fiona Benson (Dawson Creek, B.C.) started the season heading down the right path.
The four-person relay competition, in which each athlete runs a 2.6 mile leg (just over four kilometres) saw both the Spartans men’s and women’s teams run the 10.4 mile loop around the lake (just over 16.5 kilometres) in impressive fashion.
Johnston, racing in his first competition with the Spartans, was particularly sharp as he had his team in seventh place after the opening leg while on the women’s side, Benson blew away the opening leg field as she was 90 seconds clear of second place after the first quarter of the relay.
The Spartans will now gear up for the Sundodger Invitational at Lincoln Park in Seattle, WA Sept. 17. Trinity Western will compete in the open portion of the competition.
