POWRIE FINISHES FIFTH IN PENTATHLON AT NATIONALS

WINNIPEG, Manitoba –
In his first ever appearance at the CIS national championships, Trinity Western’s Jake Powrie (Vancouver, B.C.) finished fifth in the pentathlon with a personal best and Spartans record 3650 points Thursday at the Max Bell Fieldhouse on the University of Manitoba campus.

Powrie, whose performance Thursday actually had him tied for fourth place in points but come up just short in the tiebreaker – which is determined by whoever wins more events between the tied competitors – bettered his previous personal best of 3581, which he achieved two weeks ago at the Canada West championships en route to a conference bronze medal.

“After the first couple of events, things weren’t going as well as I had hoped,” Powrie said. “I was trying to improve in every event and it wasn’t happening. But I tried to keep my head up and when I got to high jump, everything started to click. And then in the 1000m I just kept pushing and overall I’m just really happy with my performance.

“God helps me out all the time. He helps me when I doing well and when I’m having trouble. He always gets me through it. I prayed [after the first three events] and he got me through it. I finished strong and it was great all around.”

Coming into the event ranked sixth amongst competitors, Powrie had personal bests in the high jump, clearing 1.95m, and in the 1000m race, finishing in 2:42.21. He also had a pentathlon personal best in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.02. In the long jump, he jumped 6.57m and in the shot put he threw 11.72m.

With the fifth place finish, Powrie collected four team points for the Spartans who returned to the CIS national championships for the first time since Trinity Western’s track and field program dissolved in 2003.

The Spartans will be back on the track Friday as both Calum Innes and Hazel Ross will compete in their respective 60m hurdles events. On Saturday, Fiona Benson will run in the 1500m race and Emma Nuttall will compete in the high jump.
