BENSON, INNES LEAD SPARTANS IN RECORD-BREAKING DAY AT HUSKY CLASSIC

SEATTLE – The Trinity Western track and field teams continued to make major waves in the lead-up to the Canada West Championships as both Fiona Benson (Dawson Creek, B.C.), in the 3000m, and Calum Innes (Bearsden, Scotland), in the 60m hurdles, had school record-breaking performances to lead the Spartans at the Husky Classic Saturday at the University of Washington’s Dempsey Indoor.

Benson, running in the 3000m for the first time this year, moved into the third spot in the CIS rankings with a personal best time of 9:29.12, which broke the previous school record of 9:54.76, which she set at last year’s University of Washington Indoor Open. Her effort placed her 23rd overall in the timed final.

Earlier in the day, it was Innes who got the Spartans rolling as he posed a TWU record and person best time of 8.13 in the 60m hurdles, which moves him into a tie for second in the CIS rankings. In the preliminaries, Innes broke his own TWU record of 8.19 with a clocking of 8.16. He then bettered that mark by three one-hundredths of a second to finish fourth in the final. Innes earned his previous best at the 2012 CIS national championships.

Not to be outdone, sprinter Liza Whitehead (Surrey, B.C.) posted a personal best time of 7.55 in to finish fifth overall in the 60m. Her previous best was 7.57, which she ran at Alberta’s Golden Bear Open Jan. 19. Whitehead’s time maintains her second overall position in the CIS rankings.

“It was a great day on the track for us with three lifetime bests and two school records, which follows on the heels of two season’s bests in pole vault on Friday,” said Spartans coach Laurier Primeau. “We continue to approach the season with both pragmatism and optimism. While it would be easy to get excited about the results we saw today, our eyes are still firmly focused on the Canada West and CIS championships. We believe there is more to come from our athletes in terms of athletic progression.”
