CANADA WEST CHAMPIONSHIPS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INNES, JACKSON GOLDEN ON DAY 1 OF CANADA WEST CHAMPIONSHIPS

REGINA – The Trinity Western track and field team got off to an impressive start at the Canada West championships as both Calum Innes (Bearsden, Scotland), in the 60m hurdles, and Alison Jackson (Vermilion, Alta.), in the 3000m, earned gold medals to lead the Spartans on Day 1 Friday at the Regina Fieldhouse.

Along with Innes and Jackson’s efforts, the Spartans Rebecca Marchant (Melbourne, Australia) helped add to the TWU medal haul as she earned a silver medal in the women’s pole vault while the women’s 4x800m capped the day by capturing a bronze. Along the way, the Spartans, who also had seven fourth-place finishes, broke six TWU records.

Innes’ effort in the 60m hurdles, which saw him win Canada West gold for the second year in a row, stole the Spartans spotlight as his gold-medal winning time of 8.01 broke his own TWU school record of 8.13 and was just 0.02 off the Canada West championships record.

For Jackson, her gold medal was a marked improvement on last season’s eighth place finish as she pulled away from the pack over the final 50 metres to earn her first ever Canada West medal with a time of 10:04.05.

Marchant earned her silver medal, which saw her finish in a tie for second, with a clearance of 3.80m while the TWU women’s 4x800m team nabbed bronze with a TWU record time of 9:22.79. The previous record was 9:37.86.

One of the most impressive non-medal winning performances of the day was James Linde’s (Coquitlam, B.C.) effort in the long jump. Linde came into the meet ranked 11th, but, with a TWU record and personal best jump of 6.86m, he finished fourth. Sitting in seventh place with one jump to go, Linde saved his best for his last as he put up his 6.86m mark on his last attempt. That jump bettered the previous TWU record of 6.68m, which was held by Innes.

Also amongst the noteworthy fourth-place finishes was Anastasia Pearse (Victoria, B.C.), who posted a personal best and TWU record 40.45 in the 300m preliminaries. In the final, she ran 40.68 to finish just off the podium.  She shaved nearly a second off her previous best and TWU record of 41.38.

The other TWU records that fell were the women’s 60m hurdles mark, as Hazel Ross (Bishopton, Scotland) ran 8.69 in the preliminaries, which bettered the previous record, also held by Ross, of 8.70, and the 1000m mark as Fiona Benson (Dawson Creek, B.C.) clocked a time of 2:52.39, which bettered the previous record, also held by Benson, of 2:53.48.

“As a coaching staff, we are very proud of the team’s effort today,” said Spartans coach Laurier Primeau. “Gold medals from Alison and Calum were fantastic, but we also had big performances from unexpected places, most notably, James Linde’s fourth place finish and Anastasia Pearse’s performance in the 300m.

“However, there’s no time to celebrate now. We’re back on the track Saturday with expectations of more to come.”
