NUTTALL BREAKS HIGH JUMP RECORD AT ACHILLES CUP

BURNABY, British Columbia – In Trinity Western’s first outdoor meet of the season, Spartans high jumper Emma Nuttall (Edinburgh, Scotland) broke the Achilles Cup meet record and earned first place overall at the SFU/UBC Dual Meet Sunday at Simon Fraser’s Fox Field.

Despite blustery conditions, Nuttall cleared 1.74m, breaking the previous meet record of 1.70m, which was set by SFU’s Ruky Abdulai in 2006.

Nuttall’s performance had her well ahead of her university counterparts as she finished nearly 20 centimetres clear of second place Manisha Kandola, who jumped 1.55m.

“In cold, rainy, Scotland-like weather Emma had an excellent competition using a very short approach,” said Spartans coach Laurier Primeau. “We were able to use it as a training session, and she came out with a meet record, which was previously held by the Canadian long jump record holder. To jump 1.74m in Baltic conditions after waiting an hour to enter the competition was very impressive.”

Also of note for the Spartans was the performance of James Linde (Coquitlam, B.C.) in the long jump pit. Linde finished in top spot after a jump of 6.67m, which was not far off the meet record of 6.79m, which was set by UBC’s Reid Gustavson in 2009.
