Dwayne LowdermilkHead CoachDepartment: Athletics Email: dwayne.lowdermilk@twu.ca Company: 3 Area of Expertise: Coaching Lowdermilk is entering his fourth season as head coach of the TWU men’s hockey team and second with the Spartans as he had coached the Trinity Western Titans in 1988-89 and 2009-10.
The last two seasons behind the Trinity Western men’s hockey bench – last year as the Spartans and the year before as the Titans – Lowdermilk’s teams posted identical regular season records of 10-12-2, which had them fifth in the BCIHL standings, and then, in the playoffs both teams went on to finish fourth.
In the 1988-89 season the then TWU Spartans finished the season with a record of 1-11 in the BCAA.
The former NHL’er has an extensive coaching background which has seen him coach at many levels for the past 36 years.
In 2008-09 Lowdermilk was the assistant coach and part owner of the Aldergrove Kodiaks in the PIJHL. In 2007-08 he was the assistant coach for the Hope Icebreakers in the PIJHL.
In 2006-07 he was the head scout for the Revelstoke Grizzlies of the KIJHL and an assistant coach for the championship New Westminster Whalers of the WHA working with former NHL’er Garry Unger.
In 1991-92 Lowdermilk was the head coach of the Langley PeeWee AAA team that advanced to the final four.
During his first tenure at TWU Lowdermilk also owned and operated Lowdermilk Hockey Schools from 1986-1991.
In addition to his coaching Lowdermilk developed and operated the National Training Rinks (NTR) from 1986-2004 with 10 rinks across Canada as well as training many instructors a system for teaching hockey. He also developed 3on 3 Pond Hockey to teach athletes how to make them faster and think the game. Lowdermilk has written and published a book on A to Z Hockey Development for associations to have coaches prepare and plan yearly programs and next level skills and development to players.
He is also a participating partner of the Vancouver Canuck Alumni and a member of PuCKS charity.
Lowdermilk started playing and developing a passion for hockey when he was six years old. His desire took him all the way to the NHL where he played two games and 34 exhibitions games.
As a defenceman Dwayne Lowdermilk played a pair of games for the Washington Capitals in 1980-81. He was an offensive minded blueliner who put up big numbers in junior and enjoyed a solid minor pro career.
Born in Burnaby, BC, Lowdermilk played in the BCJHL with the Langley Lords before spending 2 1/2 years in the WCJHL with the Kamloops Chiefs and the Seattle Breakers. After scoring 28 goals for Seattle in 1977-78, the young blueliner was chosen 51st overall by the New York Islanders at the Entry Draft.
Lowdermilk played two years with the Fort Worth Texans and Indianapolis Checkers of the CHL before he was sent to the Caps for future considerations early in the 1980-81 season. He recorded an assist in two games for the club then spent most of the next two years in the minors before retiring in 1982.
