FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FORMER JUNIOR ‘A’ FORWARD GEMMELL JOINS SPARTANS HOCKEY TEAM FULL-TIME
LANGLEY, British Columbia – The Trinity Western University men’s hockey team will have former Junior “A” forward Sam Gemmell (Danville, CA) back in Spartans blue this year and coach Dwayne Lowdermilk is thrilled with the idea of having the slick American on board full-time starting this fall.
Gemmell was a one-course player with Trinity Western for the second half of last season but has committed to return this fall as a full-time student.
“Sam will bring a great amount of leadership and skill to our dressing room,” Lowdermilk said. “He’ll no doubt be a key member of our squad this fall and, having him for the whole season and right from the start of year, will certainly bolster our offense. He has shown he is willing to play in every situation and has already proven to be a reliable player with a no-quit attitude, even if that means playing through injuries.”
The 5-foot-10, 170-pound forward played in 12 regular season games for the Spartans last year, picking up two goals and seven assists, and then added another three assists in two playoff games.
In 2009-10 Gemmell played in 13 regular season and four playoff games with the BCHL’s Merritt Centennials, collecting a total of two goals and four assists. He also played two games with the Penticton Vees (BCHL).
Prior to that, he played in 18 games with the Burnaby Express (BCHL) and 23 games with the Junior “A” Winkler Flyers of the MJHL (Manitoba Junior Hockey League). While playing with the Flyers, he had five goals and seven assists in 23 games.
Gemmell joins former Junior “A” defenceman Jonathan Demme as the Spartans first two recruits coming in this fall.
