BURNABY, British Columbia
– The Trinity Western University Spartans scored three first period goals on their way to an impressive 7-4 exhibition win over the Iowa State University Cyclones Sunday morning  at the Burnaby Winter Club in Burnaby, B.C.

The Spartans, who less than a month ago had lost five straight, have now gone 3-1-1 in their last five games to improve to 5-6-1 on the season. Iowa State, who were on a three game tour of B.C, finish the exhibition tour 1-2, losing 7-4 to TWU, defeating SFU 5-2, while losing to UBC 5-4.

TWU forward Robert Vos led the way for the Spartans with three goals, while Nathan Wiebe, Brendan Elenko, Trevor Edwards and Tanner Redekop each adding singles.  Scoring for the Cyclones were Derek Kohles, Mike Lebler, Chris Cucullu and Marcus Malmsten.

The Spartans dominated the scoring early and ended the first period with a 3-0 lead, with goals from Wiebe at 16:03, Vos at 13:02 and Elenko at 5:37, despite being outshot 14-6.

TWU’s defence continued to prove to be the difference in the second period as the Spartans came out of the period being outshot 16 to six, but increased their lead by outscoring Iowa State 2-1. TWU’s Vos at 11:15 and Trevor Edwards at 10:54 scored for the Spartans, while Kohles scored the Cyclones to make the score after forty minutes 5-1 for TWU.

The third period continued the trend with Iowa State once again having a 16 to six edge in shots. But TWU got the first two goals of the third period with Vos scoring at 16:05 and Tanner Redekop scoring at 15:16. Iowa State closes the gap with three straight, including two power play goals, Lebler at 12:59, Cucullu at 9:49 and Malmsten at 3:43, to make the final 7-4.

TWU’s JP Chapman and Sean Langreiger split the goaltending duties for the Spartans Chapman made 18 saves, while Langreiger made 24 saves.

Iowa State finished the game outshooting Trinity Western 46 to 18.

Next up for the Spartans are back-to-back games with the University of Victoria on Friday, December 3 and Saturday, December 4. Game times at the Langley Events Centre are set for 7 p.m. on Friday and 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Saturday’s game against Victoria follows the Hockey Night in Canada Outdoor Festival, which runs from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. After the Spartans game there will be a chance to skate with the Spartans on the LEC ice.
