SPARTANS PUSH TOP RANKED WOLFPACK

KAMLOOPS, British Columbia
– The Trinity Western University Spartans men’s hockey team fell to the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack 5-4 Friday night at Memorial Arena in Kamloops, B.C.

The Spartans battled from behind to take a third period lead, but two late goals by the TRU lifted the WolfPack past the Spartans. The win moves the first place WolfPack to 13-2, while the loss drops the Trinity Western to 6-9-1.

“The guys played their hearts out tonight. It was great to see that kind of effort and passion we were flying,” commented TWU head coach Dwayne Lowdermilk. “We had lots of shots and the guys were driving the net and trying to make things happen. We had them at the end, but we just let up.”

The Spartans started the game strong and used goals by Ian Spencer at 9:06 and Josh Stephenson at 6:39 to take a 2-0 first period lead.

Thompson Rivers responded in the second period with three unanswered goals by Andrew Fisher at 19:34, David Gore at 9:20 and Darcy Huisman at 1:37 to take the one goal, 3-2, lead into the final frame.

The visitors from Langley came out in the third period and quickly tied the game on a goal by Trevor Edwards at 18:42. The Spartans then regained the lead just over a minute later at 17:11 on a goal by Sam Gemmel. TWU’s lead would be short lived as TRU’s Andrew Fisher got his second of the night to tie the game at 16:19. The WolfPack’s David Gore got his second of the night and the game winner at 13:37 of the third. TWU pushed hard in the final minutes, but were unable to get the equalizer as the fell 5-4.

TRU’s Riley Wall made 23 saves to earn the win, while TWU split the backstopping duties between John-Paul Chapman, who made 21 saves and gave up two goals in 31 minutes, and Sean Langreiger, who made 12 saves and gave up three goals in 29 minutes.
 
Next up for the Spartans is at the University of the Fraser Valley on Friday, February 4 at 7 p.m.
