SPARTANS FALL TO FIRST PLACE SFU
BURNABY, British Columbia – The Trinity Western University Spartans fell 4-1 to Simon Fraser University in a penalty filled contest Friday night at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre in Burnaby, B.C.
The win moves first place SFU to 13-3-2 on the season, while the loss drops the fifth place Spartans to 6-10-1.
SFU opened the game quickly and found the back of TWU net a mere 50 seconds into the game. Volodymyr Dashko was credited with the goal with assists going to Patrik Martin and Jaime Laprise. Simon Fraser’s Paul Moscone goal, assisted by Patrik Martin and Jaime Laprise, made it 2-0 at 11:48.
Colby Kulhanek scored on the power play at 2:04, assists to James Isaac and Ben Van Lare, to give the home team a 3-0 first period lead.
Josh Stephenson scored the lone goal for the Spartans, with assists going to Brendan Elenko and Brandon Long, at 12:06 of the second period to narrow the margin to two goals. Simon Fraser’s Patrik Martin regained the margin with a power play goal at 6:52, with assists to Paul Moscone and Christopher Hoe.
The third period turned into less than pretty hockey, with 23 penalties called, as neither team found the back of the net.
TWU’s Tim Zwiers made 29 saves in the loss, while SFU’s Evan Kurylo made 20 saves to earn the win.
Next up for the Spartans are their final two home games of the season when they have a return match with SFU on Fri., Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. and then on Sat., Feb. 12 TWU takes on Okanagan College at 1 p.m. Both games are played at the Langley Events Centre and can be seen live on SpartansTV at gospartans.ca.
Game Notes: referees Sam MacPhearson and Kam Poirier were kept busy on the night calling 38 penalties… TWU was 0-4 on the power play, while SFU went 2-9…
