SPARTANS OPEN PRESEASON WITH LOSS TO SFU

BURNABY, British Columbia
– The Trinity Western University Spartans men’s hockey team opened the 2011-12 pre-season with a 9-4 loss to the two time defending BCIHL champion Simon Fraser University Saturday night at Bill Copeland Sports Centre in Burnaby, B.C.

“It was great to finally be back playing. As the coaching staff in practices at Langley Sportsplex we have commented about the increase in our teams speed and it was very exciting to see it in action in game conditions,” commented TWU head coach Dwayne Lowdermilk. “But the greatest benefit to playing an SFU team that has been, training heavily, was our teams camaraderie on the bench. I think we had more discussion on the bench tonight than we had all season last year, discussing a play or how to finish it better.”

Despite having a banged up roster from off season injuries, while missing four solid veterans and three rookie players from the line up, all of whom will bring more scoring punch to the team, the Spartans came out flying and after their first four shots of the night had built a 2-0 lead.

Simon Fraser, who has been skating since July and are playing their fourth preseason game, gradually took control of the game as injuries took their toll on the Trinity Western squad.

By the end of the contest the Spartans, who were already playing with an injury shortened bench, were down to seven forwards and five defensemen. “It’s not worth playing guys hurting from sprains, blocked shots and high hits in the game when it is preseason,” said Lowdermilk.

SFU would end the game outshooting TWU 43-21 to earn the 9-4 victory.

TWU split the goaltending duties between Tim Zwier’s and JP Chapman.

“With our chemistry, once we get everyone healthy and our systems in place it promises to be a great year,” added Lowdermilk.

The Spartans next game is Friday, September 16, when they will host SFU. Game time and location have yet to be determined.

Game Notes: the Spartans have been training at the Langley Sportsplex as their home ice at the Langley Events Centre has been delayed with the Langley Thunder lacrosse team playing in the Mann Cup…
