SPARTANS FALL TO DAWGS IN PRESEASON
SEATTLE, Wash. – The Trinity Western University Spartans men’s hockey team had an uphill battle Friday night as they fell 7-4 to the University of Washington Huskies in Seattle, Wash.
The Spartans had a tough go with different rule interpretation and were given 60 minutes in penalties, including a 10 minutes straight penalty, while only having 25 seconds on the power play. Despite the lopsided penalties the Spartans still managed to put four pucks into the back of the Huskies net.
“Tonight’s game will be a conversation piece for years to come. It was great for our guys to pull together in a situation out of our control,” commented TWU head coach Dwayne Lowdermilk. “I’ve never in my 45 years of hockey seen a 10 minute running penalty, but no excuses we still lost the game.”
Scoring for Trinity Western were centre Kye Benjaminson, with two goals, and winger Ian Spencer and centre Chris Hirano with a goal each.
TWU keeper Tim Zwiers faced 50 shots in the loss.
The Spartans and the Huskies will match-up again tomorrow night. Puck drop is scheduled for 8 p.m.
TWU opens BCIHL league play on Saturday October 8 at Simon Fraser University.
