EASTERN WASHINGTON (2) TRINITY WESTERN (1)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPARTANS LOSE CLOSE ONE AT EASTERN WASHINGTON
CHENEY, Washington – The Trinity Western men’s hockey team lost its fifth game in a row to start the BCIHL season as they fell to Eastern Washington 2-1 Saturday night at the EWU Recreation Complex.
The Eagles scored the first two goals of the game off the sticks of AJ Sanders and Sloan Tennant and then hung on late as the Spartans Brandon Long scored a beauty of a goal late in the third period but that was all Trinity Western could muster offensivley.
The win moves Eastern Washington to 4-0-0 on the year while the Spartans are now 0-5-0 and at the bottom of the BCIHL standings.
Trinity Western goalie Tim Zwiers got the start between the pipes and did well to keep the Spartans in the game as he stopped 35 of 37 shots fired his way. But Eastern Washington goalie Cash Ulrich was equally as impressive, stopping 35 of 36 Spartans shots.
After a scoreless opening period, the Eagles got on the scoreboard first Sanders, with assists to Bret Kellogg and Elliot Martin scored just 1:28 into the middle frame.
The Eagles added to their lead just over six minutes later when Tennant scored a goal assisted by Nick Kelly.
In the third period, the Spartans Long cut Eastern Washington’s lead in half on a powerplay goal assisted by Kye Benjaminsen and Chris Stew with 3:21 left in the game. But on this night a comeback wasn’t in the cards as the Eagles held on for the win.
The Spartans finished one for seven on the powerplay while Eastern Washington was shutout on six attempts.
Trinity Western is next in action Oct. 28-29 when they host Selkirk and Okanagan College on back-to-back days. Game time Friday is at 7:00 p.m. while Saturday’s contest starts at 1:00 p.m.
