OKANAGAN DOUBLES UP SPARTANS

KELOWNA, British Columbia –
The Trinity Western men’s hockey team fell to Okanagan 6-3 Friday night at the Kelowna Memorial Arena.

Despite getting on the board first and tying the game up late in the second period, the Spartans were undone in the third period as they were outscored 4-1 en route to a three-goal loss.

Okanagan was led by Kyle L’Arrivee, who had a goal and two assists, Chris Glen, who had two goals on the night and Aaron Buat, who registered three assists. Goalie Sunny Gill stopped 25 shots to earn the win.

Trinity Western was led by Matt Chaput, who scored two goals while Jordan Magnuson had the other tally for the Spartans. Goalie Tim Zwiers made 34 saves in a losing effort.

The loss drops the Spartans to 4-12-4 on the season while the win improves Okanagan to 13-4-3.

“We had a hard fought first two periods but in the third period we couldn’t quite get it done,” said Spartans coach Dwayne Lowdermilk. “It wasn’t for a lack of effort but unfortunately it didn’t go our way tonight.”

The Spartans got off to a good start in the opening frame as Magnuson scored just 1:16 into the contest. From there Trinity Western continued to attack as it managed to outshoot the Coyotes 10-9 after 20 minutes and maintain a 1-0 lead going into the dressing room.

In the second however, the Coyotes got goals from Glen and L’Arrivee to give the home team a 2-1 lead and an advantage it seemed they would take into the third period.

But a goal from the Spartans Chaput with just four seconds left in the middle frame knotted the game 2-2.

Early in the third, Okanagan’s Glen scored a power play marker 2:16 in and the Coyotes were off to the races.

Just over four minutes late Shawn Mulcahy gave Okanagan a 4-2 edge and the Coyotes had the lead for good.

Chaput cut their advantage in half with 4:30 left in the game but Trinity Western couldn’t get any closer and after a pair of Coyotes goals late – Brendan Urban scored with 2:31 left and Tison Schoenthal scored with 2:06 left – Okanagan iced their third win in a row.

Three Stars
1. Chris Glen – Okangan
2. Shawn Mulcahy – Okanagan
3. Patrik Martin – Okanagan
