THOMPSON RIVERS RALLIES IN THIRD TO BEAT SPARTANS
KAMLOOPS, British Columbia – Despite leading 2-1 heading into the third period, the Trinity Western men’s hockey team lost 4-3 to Thompson Rivers Friday at the Kamloops Memorial Arena.
Thanks to goals from Tristano Falbo and Brandon Long, Trinity Western, despite being outshot 25-16 through the first 40 minutes, was up by one goal going into the final frame. But Thompson Rivers scored two goals in the first four minutes of the third to take the lead 3-2 and then added another one late as they rallied for the 4-3 win. Trinity Western’s Falbo scored his second of the night with 2:02 left to close the gap to one but that’s as close as the Spartans would get.
The loss drops Trinity Western to 4-13-4 on the season while Thompson Rivers improves to 12-6-4.
Spartans goalie Tim Zwiers made 32 saves in a losing effort while WolfPack goalie Riley Wall stopped 25 shots for the win.
“We battled hard all night but we just couldn’t quite hang on,” said Spartans coach Dwayne Lowdermilk. “We had several key plays that could have turned the game in our favour but we couldn’t capitalize.”
Thompson Rivers opened the scoring early in the first when Cody Lockwood notched his third of the season, with assists to Jose Reyes and Mick Ludvig.
Still inside the first three minutes of the game, Trinity Western responded, when Falbo scored his first goal as a Spartan to tie the game 1-1. Brandon Long and Josh Gordon assisted on the play.
Then, with just 20 seconds left in the second period, Long gave the Spartans a 2-1 with his team-leading 14th goal of the year. Brad Bakken and Sam Gemmell earned assists.
But in the third period, it was all WolfPack in terms of the early goal-scoring.
Andrew Fisher at 1:50, Kyle Allan at 3:37 and Dylan Becker at 15:39 all scored for Thompson Rivers to give the home side a 4-2 edge.
Falbo’s late goal, assisted by Bakken and Long, made it close but unfortunately for the Spartans not close enough as they now have just one win in their last 11 games.
1. Dylan Becker – TRU
2. Tim Zwiers – TWU
3. Shane Oatway – TRU
The Spartans are next in action Mar.2 when they host Victoria at 7:00 p.m. at the Langley Events Centre.
Trinity Western will host an alumni game Saturday between the Spartans alumni and the Vancouver Canucks alumni at 8:00 p.m. at the Langley Events Centre.
Game Notes: The Spartans were outshot 36-28…TWU was 0 for 2 on the power play while TRU was 0 for 3…with his three points tonight, Long extended his point streak to six games…he has seven goals and five assists over that span.
