SPARTANS FALL TO SAINTS
CASTLEGAR, British Columbia – The Trinity Western University men’s hockey team dropped their first road game of the season 6-1 to the Selkirk College Saints Saturday evening in BCIHL action in Castlegar, B.C. The loss drops the Spartans to 0-3 on the season, while Selkirk improves to 3-0.
The Spartans had a rough go with the Saints as Selkirk outshot TWU 64 to 25 on the game including a 26 to eight advantage in the second period.
TWU goalie Harry Fredeman made 58-saves in the loss, while Selkirk’s Chris Hurry made 24-saves to record the win.
Despite being outshot 19 to seven in the first period the Spartans only trailed the Saints 2-0 on two power play goals by Selkirk’s Logan Proulx at 12:00 and Jackson Garrett at 9:47.
The Saints Thomas Hardy opened the second period scoring at 16:20 to put Selkirk up 3-0. Less than a minute later, 15:28, the Spartans got on the board with a goal from Trevor Beaupre, with assists going to Jake Harcoff and Matt Chaput to make it 3-1 for the home team.
Selkirk’s Jordan Wood restored the three goal margin at 11:09 of the period.
But the final minute of the period was when the Saints broke open the game with two goals in 31 seconds. Nick Cecconi scored with 40 seconds remaining and Thomas Hardy followed it up with a goal with nine seconds remaining to make the score 6-1 heading into the third period.
The Saints had a 19-10 edge in shots in the final period, but neither team was able to find the back of the net to make the final 6-1 for Selkirk.
Trinity Western is back on the ice Saturday night when they travel to Cheney, Wash. to take on the Eastern Washington Eagles.
