THOMPSON RIVERS (5) TRINITY WESTERN (2)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MEN’S HOCKEY FALLS TO TRU ON THE ROAD
KAMLOOPS, British Columbia – The Trinity Western men’s hockey team allowed three unanswered second period goals Saturday and that proved to be the difference as the Spartans fell to the Thompson Rivers WolfPack 5-2 at the Kamloops Memorial Arena.
The Spartans went into the second period tied with the WolfPack 1-1 but the home side broke the game open with three tallies, two of which came on the power play, and took a lead it wouldn’t relinquish. The teams then traded goals in the third period as the WolfPack cruised to their third win of the season.
The Spartans are now 0-7-0-0 while the WolfPack is 3-2-0-0.
The WolfPack was led by team captain Curtis Tonello and first-year centre Tyler Jackson, who each had a pair of goals while Nathan Michaels rounded out TRU’s scoring with a single tally.
The Spartans responded with goals from Douglas Gordon (Ottawa) and Brody Hemrich (Surrey, B.C.). Hemrich also had one assist while Sam Gemmell (Danville, Cali.) earned helpers on both TWU goals.
Trinity Western’s Tim Zwiers (Williams Lake, B.C.) made 37 saves in the loss while Riley Wall stopped 22 shots to earn the win.
“We played a solid first period but in the second period we allowed a couple of aggressive plays to affect our game plan and we took too many penalties,” said Spartans coach Dwayne Lowdermilk. “In the third period we had enough offensive chances to get back in the game but we couldn’t finish them. If we played the second period like we played the first and third, it would have been a different game. But that didn’t happen and we have to figure out how to be a more consistent team.”
TRU opened the game with a first strong shift, putting the pressure on TWU early on and establishing strong offensive penetration for the first five minutes.
The WolfPack rushed the net and had plenty of chances, but was unable to capitalize on a 5-on-3 power play early on in the first. Shortly thereafter, TWU opened the scoring, at 8:48 of the first period, when Gordon scored with the man-advantage. Hemrich and Gemmell earned assists.
However, less than four minutes later, TRU tied the contest when Jackson won a puck battle in the corner and made a quick pass out in front to Nathan Micheals, who fired the puck past Zwiers, sending the teams into the intermission knotted 1-1.
In the second, TRU outshot the Spartans 11-6 and were rewarded for its efforts. Jackson started the offensive foray with a pair of goals in the first five minutes and Tonello added his first of night with just over eight minutes to go in the period to give TRU a three-goal edge after 40 minutes.
In the third period, Tonello made it 5-1 at the 7:06 mark before Hemrich’s goal at 7:23 rounded out the game’s scoring.
The Spartans Jamie Russell (Surrey) earned a penalty shot midway through the final frame after he was tripped on a breakaway but his attempt was stopped by Wall.
