SPARTANS OPEN SECOND HALF WITH LOSS

VICTORIA – The Trinity Western University men’s hockey team fell 6-4 to the University of Victoria to open the second half of the BCIHL season Saturday night in Victoria at the Ian Stewart Complex. The win moves Victoria to 6-7-0-1, while the loss drops the Spartans to 1-10-0-1. Victoria currently sits in third spot in the standings, while TWU is in sixth.

“The boys battled hard tonight, we out shot them and we saw great things out of our new recruits,” commented TWU head coach Dwayne Lowdermilk. “Our defence also played well scoring or assisting on three of our four goals.”

Victoria jumped out to the early 1-0 lead with a goal by Eli Wiebe at 1:39 of the opening period. Victoria made it a two goal margin when Adam Klein scored under three minutes later, at 4:17.

The Spartans got on the board in at 11:46 on a power play goal from Cody Stevenson. Stevenson converted the rebound off of a Tyler Miller shot from the point to cut the Victoria lead to 2-1.

Trinity Western tied the game at 6:26 of the second period. Spartan captain Brad Bakken took a D-to-D pass and sent a long shot through traffic to beat Victoria’s Sunny Gill. Tyler Miller and Trevor Beaupre earned the assists on the goal.

Just when it looked like the Spartans were back in the game Victoria scored three goals in just over two minutes, including two in 34 seconds, to give the home team a three goal lead, 5-2, with just under 13 minutes remaining in the second period.

The Spartans got one back at 15:20 when Blair Murphy found open space by the right circle and converted a rebound on a stuff shot from the left side of the crease to make the score 5-3 for Victoria heading into the third period. Jamie Russell and Jamey Kreller earned the assists.

The Spartans got a power play goal at 9:44 from Kreller when he picked up a loose puck in the slot, moved to his left and open space to find the open left side of the Victoria goal to make it a one goal deficit, 5-4, with over half a period remaining in the contest. Josh Stephenson and Jamie Russell got the assists.

Victoria got the insurance goal with 6:55 remaining in the game.  Victoria’s Mitchell Bell came in one on four and slide a screen shot from just inside the blue line to the low left side of the TWU net to make the final 6-4 for Victoria.

Tim Zwiers made 29 saves in the loss, while Victoria’s Sunny Gill made 36 saves to earn the win.

TWU will now head home to host the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack on Friday, January 11. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Langley Events Centre.
