SPARTANS HAND TOP RANKED SAINTS FIRST LOSS
CASTLEGAR, British Columbia – The Trinity Western University Spartans men’s hockey team saw their full game come together Friday night as they handed the previously unbeaten Selkirk College Saints a 2-1 loss at the Castlegar Recreation Centre in Castlegar, B.C.
The loss drops the top ranked Saints to 13-1, while the win improves the Spartans to 3-10-0-1 and gives them a modest two game winning streak.
Second year goalie, and 2011-12 BCIHL all-star, Tim Zwiers played exceptionally well as he was named first star after stopping all but one of the 48 Selkirk shots he faced on the evening to earn the one goal victory.
“Tim played like he did when he first signed with us,” commented TWU head coach Dwayne Lowdermilk. “Every guy did his job and executed everything we have been working on. It was great game and a great game to watch.”
The Spartans, who had 20 shots on the Saints net, got a goal from Cody Stephenson at 9:54 of the first period and a game winning power play goal from Trevor Beaupre with 40 seconds remaining in the second period to help secure the critical win for TWU.
Selkirk’s loan goal came at 17:35 of the third period off of the stick of Connor McLaughlin. The Saints Chris Hurry took the loss for the Saints stopping 18 shots.
The Spartans will now travel to Cheney, Wash. to take on the Eastern Washington Eagles Saturday night at EWU Rec Center. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game will be broadcasted live on www.fasthockey.com
