SPARTANS FALL ON THE ROAD AGAINST EASTERN WASHINGTON

CHENEY, Washington – After beating Eastern Washington by a 6-2 count in the Trinity Western men’s hockey team’s final game of the fall semester, the Eagles reversed the result Saturday as they exacted revenge with a 6-2 win of their own at the EWU Recreation Centre.

Eastern Washington (6-7-0-1) scored four second period goals to pace the Eagles to their second win in as many games in the month of January. The Spartans (3-11-0-1), who knocked off previously undefeated Selkirk Friday night, were unable to duplicate their effort Saturday and are now winless in four trips to Cheney since EWU entered the BCIHL in 2011.

The Eagles Ryan Pajomila had two goals and two assists to lead EWU while Jake Flynn had two goals and an assist and Uriah Machuga had three assists. Goalie Jason Greenwell made 29 saves on the 31 shots he faced to earn the win.

Jake Harcoff (Surrey, B.C.) and Cody Stephenson (Aldergrove, B.C.) scored for the Spartans while Matt Ius (Langley) had two assists. Tim Zwiers (Williams Lake, B.C.) made 28 saves in a losing effort.

After Eastern Washington’s Flynn opened the scoring in the first period, the Spartans Stephenson tied the game just 27 seconds into the second period.

But then the Eagles started to fly. Goals from Brandon Butler, Joel Blasko and a pair from Pajomila put EWU up 5-2 by the end of the middle frame. With the score 4-1, TWU’s Harcoff scored with 4:10 left in the period to make it a two-goal game, but Pajomila’s late tally in the second all but sealed the deal.

The Eagles Flynn scored with just under five minutes left in the third to round out the scoring.

Game Notes: TWU was 0 for 4 on the power play while EWU was 0 for 5…EWU outshot TWU 34-31.
