WOLFPACK SKATE PAST SPARTANS IN THIRD
LANGLEY, British Columbia –The Trinity Western University Spartans had a tough third period Saturday afternoon as they fell 7-0 to the visiting Thompson Rivers University WolfPack in BCIHL action at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C.
“We had zero puck luck not that was the main issue. The battles we lost along boards and in open ice caused us our share of problems,” commented TWU head coach Dwayne Lowdermilk. “They out worked us all over the ice. We are talented on one hand and under achieve on the other.”
Thompson Rivers, who outshot the TWU 44-28, were led by Anthony Delong with four goals on the afternoon as the third place WolfPack improve to 8-8-0-3 and 19 points, while the loss drops the sixth place Spartans to 4-14-0-1for nine points.
The Spartans stayed with the WolfPack through the first two periods, but a four goal outbreak in the third period sealed the game for Thompson Rivers.
TWU’s had their opportunities but were unable to get the puck past TRU’s Riley Wall.
The Spartans Jamey Kreller was stopped on a breakaway at the 17:17 minute mark of the first period, which would have made it a one goal game as TWU finished the first 20 minutes trailing 2-0. TRU goals came from Delong at 5:29 on the power play and Joshua MacDonald at 14:56 of the period.
TWU’s best period was the second when they outshot Thompson Rivers 8-to-7. But the WolfPack got the lone goal of period when Travis Herlein scored with 8:43 remaining in the second period.
Then in the third period the Spartans Blair Murphy rang a puck off of the left post at 1:30 of the final period. The Spartans got a power play opportunity midway through the final period, but the WolfPack got a shorthanded goal from Delong to extend the TRU lead. The goal looked to break the Spartans spirit as the WolfPack exploded with two quick goals, at 12:49 by Delong and at 13:32 from Cody Rose, and a goal in the last five seconds by Delong to make the final 4-0
TRU’s Riley Wall made 28 saves to earn the shutout win, while the Spartans Harry Fredeman made 37 stops in the loss.
The Spartans next game will be their final home game of the 2012-13 season. TWU will take on Simon Fraser on Feb. 15. Game time at the Langley Events Centre is set for 7 p.m.
Game Notes: TRU got the three stars of the game with Delong, MacDonald and Curtis Tonello earning the honours…TWU was 0-for-8 on the power play, while TRU went 1-for-7…
