SPARTANS FALL TO VICTORIA
VICTORIA, British Columbia – The Trinity Western University men’s hockey team fell 4-2 to the University of Victoria Friday night at the Ian Stewart Complex in Victoria, B.C. The loss drops the Spartans to 6-15-0-2 and out of post season contention, while the win moves Victoria to 9-13-0-1 with a shot at fourth place heading into the final game of the season.
“The boys left it all on the ice,” commented TWU head coach Dwayne Lowdermilk. “ They worked hard gave all it right to the end.”
The two teams were evenly matched throughout the game with the Spartans and Vikes tied at 1-1 heading into the final period.
There was no scoring in the second period, while Victoria’s Shawn Mueller scored just 1:54 into the game, with TWU’s Cody Stephenson tying the contest at 1-1 with a goal at 11::04.
Victoria scored at 1:55 of the third period to break the deadlock. The Vikes Matthew Bell got the eventual game winner on the power play with 6:57 remaining in the game.
The Vikes Eli Wiebe would add the insurance goal at 15:20 of the third period.
TWU’s Jamie Russell scored on the power play with 2:59 remaining in the game.
Victoria’s Sunny Gill made 27 saves to earn the win, while TWU’s Harry Fredeman made 26 saves in the loss.
The Spartans will conclude the 2012-13 season Saturday night against the Vikes. Puck drop at the Ian Stewart Complex is set for 8 p.m.
